Resources and sources of information to help schools address homophobic bullying

Stonewall: School Champions
Stonewall’s new School Champions programme aims to give schools the skills and resources they need to prevent and tackle homophobic bullying. It will also help schools to comply with the Equality Act 2010 and to fulfil the revised Ofsted judgements.

Stonewall Education Guide: Working with faith communities
This guide provides advice on how to tackle homophobic bullying in a faith context, guidance on how the law supports schools in this work, and practical tips on how to build a whole school approach to homophobic bullying in sympathy with its religious and cultural ethos. It also showcases good practice by faith schools who are already doing positive work around this issue.

Pink Triangle Theatre
Pink Triangle is a theatre company set up to produce plays that tackle homophobia, bigotry and intolerance. Their anti-homophobia production ‘SHOW ONE!, along with workshops, is available for secondary schools, colleges and workplaces. The play aims to challenge homophobic attitudes and language. Promoting Transgender Equality in Further Education
This briefing, prepared by the Learning Skills Improvement Service, working closely with GIRES (Gender Identity Research and Education Society) offers FE providers a greater understanding of transgender issues, and guidance on relevant law and good practice in relation to transgender employees and learners.

Stonewall: Education for All 
Stonewall's national Education for All campaign against homophobic bullying was launched in 2005. Since then Stonewall has produced research such as The School Report and The Teachers' Report, awareness raising materials like the 'Some people are gay, get over it!' posters, postcards and stickers as well as teaching resources such as the film FIT. Produced for Key Stages 3 and 4, FIT is a film about friendship, coming out and fitting in. All resources can be downloaded or ordered from the Stonewall website. Also part of the campaign are the Education Champions programme for local authorities and the Youth Volunteering Programme.

Tackle Homophobia
Tacade has a website dedicated to supporting schools to tackle homophobia. The site outlines relevant legislation and includes details of resources for all key stages, with downloadable secondary resources. 

Exceeding Expectations
'Exceeding Expectations' is a three-year initiative that aims to support schools in tackling homophobic bullying. It is part of Manchester Children's Services Equality Strategy. The project provides staff training, a play (OUTLOUD), follow-up workshops, lesson plans and a young people's peer support group. The Exceeding Expectations website has downloadable resources to support teachers, staff and young people.

The Homophobia Project 
Made by Peer Productions, this DVD encourages young people to question their behaviour and gain awareness and understanding about equality and diversity issues whilst providing teachers with a starting point for discussion and change. The DVD comes with a full teachers pack. LGBT Youth North West resources
LGBT Youth North West have produced a range of resources for schools and youth settings to explore issues relating to sexuality, including homophobic bullying.

Out in School
Free teaching pack from the  Terrence Higgins Trust, providing teachers with ideas on how to talk about sexual orientation and challenge homophobia in schools. The pack can be downloaded or contact Phillip Wragg to order a free copy or ask any questions

EACH – Educational Action Challenging Homophobia
EACH is the award-winning charity for adults and young people affected by homophobia. It provides a freephone Actionline across England and Wales for young people affected by homophobic bullying. EACH delivers training on a variety of sexual orientation issues to a wide range of organisations and co-wrote the “Safe to Learn: Homophobic Bullying” guidance for the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

Schools Out
Dedicated to fighting homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism in education. Website features a teaching pack and a student toolkit

LGBT History Month
Provides an opportunity for schools to teach and learn more about the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Britain and Northern Ireland

Sticks and Stones
Project from the Rural Media Company which aims to raise awareness of homophobic bullying in rural areas. With the support of EACH, the project set up an online forum which recorded the experiences of young LGBT people, who were then involved in creating a dark and shocking 10 minute film, called 'Bleeding Poof', which conveys the harm caused by homophobic bullying. Copies of the film can be obtained from the Rural Media Company - call 01432 344039 or enquire by email

Guidance on Combating Transphobic Bullying in Schools
Schools are bound by a general duty to protect all their transgender pupils and staff from transphobic bullying. This guidance, from the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES) contains guidance for schools on effective ways to support and protect transgender pupils and staff.

No Outsiders
The 'No Outsiders' project  funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, in collaboration with Exeter University and the Institute of Education, supports primary teachers in developing and evaluating school projects that address sexual equalities. The website includes teaching resources, research and guidance, and relevant links.
